Augusta Virginia deeds & such

AUGUSTA COUNTY COURTS taken from the Augusta County, Virginia Heritage book, 9 x 12 hard bound, 250 pages, 600 vintage pictures and over 500 family stories. The book may be purchased from the Ucanpublish blog at the top left, buy button.

The following is a listing of some of the Augusta County Court proceedings over two hundred years ago:
John Graham committed to the stocks for ½ hour for contempt and bound to peace towards James Lockhart.
Sheriff ordered to repair the pillory and underpin the stocks two feet from the ground and place a gate at each side of bar in court house.
Euphenia Hughes—granted ordinary license.
To William Hide—building a jailor’s house. Cost $139.15 or 33,590 pounds of tobacco.
The King vs George Lewis for driving his wagon on the Sabbath Day.
David Harmon summoned to Court for not bringing up his children in a Christian manner.
Dr. George Parker, servant of Samuel McChesney, buys his freedom.
Scott vs. Clinebell. William Scott complains that several years ago he laid off a town on his lands known by name of Middlebrook. George Clinebell drew lot #28.
William Robertson sues James Anderson for trespass. James killed Robertson’s fowls and hogs with Ratsbane.
James Bell disturbed Court by playing ball.
Mary McCay bound to William Wallace (a tithable), lived near Middle River.
Joseph Martin having misbehaved in a boisterous manner in the court house yard while Court was in session. The sheriff took him into custody there to remain until he entered into payment for his good behavior of the sum of 10 pounds.
Lewis Womanstaff, age 4 years to be bound to Ludwig Wagoner. His father has run away.
Charles Boddy fined for peddling without a license.
John Caldwell has leave to build an Oil Mill on his land on South River.
Charles Lewis qualifies as Lieut. Colonel of County Militia.
Robert Lyle bound over towards Moses Trimble to keep the peace and his name be stricken from list of recommendations as sheriff.
Called Court on Frederick Speer charged with horse stealing. Bound over to Grand Jury.
Mary Thompson, a soldier’s wife, with small children allowed 15 pounds.
Moses Henshaw ordered confined as a deserter until he can be delivered to some Continental officer.
The last Court held under authority of English King George III, May 1, 1776.
The first Court held under authority of the Commonwealth, July 16, 1776.
The Parish Church at Staunton (Trinity Episcopal) was finished early in 1763. It was accepted by the vestry June 25. Two members of the vestry—Sampson Matthews and John Poage—voted against receiving the building, they “supposing the brick in the church to be insufficient.”
Steven Halston having disturbed the Court by fighting and abusing the sheriff, was taken into custody. Ordered that sheriff pursue him and he be admitted to jail. Ordered also that he be fined 15 pounds for contempt and that he find surety for his good behavior to be paid a pound a month.
John Lambert and Jane, his wife, to be summoned for not bringing up their child properly.
John Frogg to be paid for repairing the jail and building ducking stool.
The old court house in which Alexander St. Clair lives now to be leased for five years.
It appears that Archer Matthews is no longer capable of instructing his apprentice, Robert Shaw, as an apprentice and James Shaw, Robert’s father is incapable of bringing him up in a Christian like manner, is to be bound to John Frogg, to learn the same trade.
On August 21, 1770, John Bear and George Spear naturalized.
Commonwealth vs. George Brown—infant. Indictment for throwing stones and putting out eye of William Alexander.
Thomas Wilson kept the Red House Tavern on main road between Lexington and Staunton.
In 1770 Samuel Lammie settled on Cove Creek and lived there until 1774 when he was taken by the Indians.
